THE REALITIES OF DRUG ADDICTION

Realities of Drug Addiction IV Drug Use Syringe

Drawn by Alexander

The purpose of the Realities of Drug Addiction is to provide evidence-based information about drug addiction and to share my personal experience of my son's battle with addiction. Alexander brought joy to so many people's lives, even with his addiction to drugs. Unfortunately, he passed away from an overdose in May 2022. As his mother and being a nurse, I feel it is important to share Alexander's battle and to provide accurate, easy-to-understand information about drug addiction.

The drawing to the left shows the battle Alexander faced. He tried hard to overcome his addiction but the drugs changed the circuitry of his brain making it extremely difficult for him to stay drug-free.

A person with any type of addiction needs empathy, not judgement. I hope this blog can help people to understand that addiction is a disease and not a choice.

This blog is dedicated to my precious son, Alexander.
