Addiction is a Disease, Not a Crime

People who use drugs or have an addiction to substances continue to be penalized in the criminal justice system. This punishment does not improve substance use disorders or addiction. Incarceration actually leads to an increase risk of overdose following release due to a loss of substance tolerance.
